Today was SUCH a gorgeous day! Cool early autumn breeze, low humidity, bountiful sunshine, and happy people all around me! I took part in Bridges of Milford's annual fundraiser, Folks on Foot. (I didn't feel like dragging my bike out from the basement for the bicycle portion, Folks on Spokes) It was a 5k walk, and I brought my doggie, Abby the Labby, with me!


Abby the Labby, wearing her stylish head collar, waits patiently for the walk to begin.

She did great, we made a new friend, and the walk was fabulous- down Helwig to High Street, down Green to Pond Street, then all the way down Rogers Ave to Fort Trumbull Beach. It sort of reminded me of walking to school when I was a kid attending Fort Trumbull School! We walked along the shore, then down Seaside, onto Kinloch, and back onto Rogers Ave to backtrack to Fowler Pavilion. It was a super walk on a brisk morning, with pizza waiting for us at the end!

Abby and I will be walking again next year; who will be joining us?

This is the true story of George Phillips of Meridian, Mississippi, who was going to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the shed. George opened the door to go turn off the light but saw there were people in the shed in the process of stealing things.

He immediately phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?" and George said no and explained the situation. Then they explained that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be there when available.

George said, "Okay," hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again.

"Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I've just shot them all."

Then he hung up. Within five minutes three squad cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up. Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed.

One of the policemen said to George: "I thought you said that you'd shot them!"

George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"

I saw these turkeys walking through the woods near Silver Sands State Park on Sunday. It's hard to tell in the video, but one of the critters had some type of rod, or arrow, or stick going all the way through its body. I tried to get closer to see what it was, but it scampered away. It didn't appear to be in any distress, but that can't possibly be good for a turkey!

I just saw the cutest thing while out for a walk at Silver Sands State Park. A lady rode by me on her old-fashioned bicycle, which had a wire basket attached to the front of the handlebars. In said basket were two really perky, really happy little dogs, wagging their tails and enjoying the ride! What a dog's life!

The (Awful) Power of Three (Leaves)

The first official plant my mom taught me to identify was one that became the bane of my childhood existence. In fact, she probably taught me to recognize it because I’d already had run-ins with the dastardly foliage. Poison ivy, as most people know, is a (terrible!) plant that contains oils that many people are allergic to. Any contact the skin has with these oils creates a horrible, itchy, oozy, red, angry, itchy, itchy, itchy, itchy rash. To this day just the sight of poison ivy, even from a moving car, gives me the willies.

As a kid, I spent weeks and weeks every summer painted pink from the calamine lotion my mom applied to my poor little body to reduce the itch. Since I was a very active kid, always playing in woods, fields, swamps, and the like, I was exposed to poison ivy, even when I did my best to avoid it. I am scratching my arms just writing this! The worst case I ever had was actually the last really bad one. And it was REALLY bad. I was playing in my grandmother’s yard in Milford, CT and the next door neighbor was burning leaves. Many people dislike the smell of burning leaves, but I actually enjoyed the acrid, outdoor scent. Unfortunately, I didn’t know that he had included A LOT of poison ivy in the pile of leaves he was burning!

Somehow the oils were aerosolized, and traveled to my grandma’s yard, making a bee-line to my sensitive skin. And the inside of my nose and mouth. And the edges of my eyelids. The next day I woke up with a tiny itchy rash next to my mouth. No biggie, I’d had far worse cases. I dabbed my pink liquid on the spot.

By the middle of that night, though, I was writhing and moaning in bed because the itch was so incredibly bad that it hurt. When I woke up the next morning, my sisters, who would usually take the opportunity to tease me about a pimple or a rash, were so horrified by my puffy, oozing face and eyes nearly swollen shut, they ran to wake my mother up without even the slightest bit of teasing. I knew I looked bad when my mom took one horrified look at me and immediately picked up the phone to make an appointment to see the doctor. I was in seventh grade at the time; a time when appearance and fitting in is so incredibly important, and I was terrified of going to school looking and feeling like that.

My mom showed a great deal of mercy and let me stay home for several days while the swelling went down. The doctor gave me a shot of prednisone (in my butt, which I was mortified about!) and a ton of Benadryl. After the swelling went down, I still had to walk around with gross crusty lesions on my face, but at least it left no scars. So, one of my personal mantras remains to this day “Leaves of three, let it be!”

I just learned that August is "Happiness Happens" month! I recently did an exercise from a book on creativity that had me list 100 things that make me happy. I thought at first that there was no way I could think of 100. I did, though, and more! Walking on the beach with my husband, playing Rock Band with my son and his friends, petting my dog's silky ears, the smell of a campfire, skiing down a long, wide slope, and so very many things are on my list. I am curious about what makes others happy, though. So, I am wondering. What makes YOU happy?

St Jude Children's Research Hospital e-mailed me today about this inspirational young man. Go Marcus!

"Twenty-four-year-old Marcus has been running most of his life—either from cancer or for it.
In 1989, 2-year-old Marcus was treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. After completing three years of treatment, Marcus returned home and he hasn’t looked back since.
“I always knew I wanted to help St. Jude as a way to give back to the hospital that saved my life,” he said.
He may not have imagined that chance to give back would come in the form of a 465-mile relay race where participants run from the St. Jude campus in Memphis, Tennessee, to Peoria, Illinois."

"Tired of throwing away fresh herbs after a day or so? Try this! Take a bunch of fresh herbs and cut off all but a inch or so of the stem. Remove ties or rubber bands, fill a glass or plastic container partially with water. Remove Any leaves that are touching the water. That will promote spoilage faster. Loosely cover with a small plastic bag and place in the fridge. Change water every couple of days and your fresh herbs may last up to 2 weeks!"

One of the stories was surprising to me. I had no idea that St Jude was doing research into Multiple Sclerosis! Since my father is one of the millions of people with MS, I was particularly interested in the article about a breakthrough that was made by Dr Kanneganti; one that could significantly improve the life of those with MS.

Rain, Rain, Rain

The weather today reminds me of the rainstorm we had in 1982 which caused significant flooding in my hometown of Milford, CT. I remember that it rained for several days straight, and I’m not talking about a nice gentle rain. It poured!

The Wepawaug River became congested with debris, causing a great deal of flooding in downtown Milford, and terrible damage in several stores. I remember that City Hall was flooded, and some records were lost, the Capitol Theater had about 6 feet of water, (they never did get the musty smell out after that!) and the children’s section of the library was filled with water. Many books were destroyed, but I remember being grateful that my favorite, “A Rocket in my Pocket” had some water damage but was salvageable. Worst of all, Wanda’s Sugar Shack was flooded! All of us kids mourned the loss of so much delicious candy, and were so happy when Wanda opened in a new location on Broad Street.

The best part of the flooding, however, was that school was cancelled for at least one day (I don’t remember if there were more days.) I DO remember, however, that we were cracking up because there was a huge flock of ducks swimming in the “bowl” at Point Beach School!

Holy Land For Sale!

Ok, Jerusalem is not actually for sale, but the site of Waterbury, Connecticut's 18 acre replica of the Holy Land has been put up for sale by its current owners, The Religious Teachers of Filippini.

The site, which for many years was a religious pseudo-theme park and tourist attraction, was built in the 1950's by John Greco. After his death many years later, the site began to deteriorate. The nuns of the order, who had inherited it after Mr Greco's death, did not maintain it, and wound up closing it to the public.

Memories

In "The Importance of Being Earnest," Oscar Wilde wrote: "Memory... is the diary that we all carry about with us." What is your earliest memory?

Mine is one from when I was about 3 years old and my dad had just come home from a business trip. He called me out from my room, where my mom was helping me get ready for bed, and I ran to the chair he was sitting in, the one right next to the fireplace. I stood there in my little hand-me-down cowboy pajamas, which had made their way all the way thorough the Lang kids before they got to me, and stood by my dad, bubbling with excitement. It was his tradition to bring me home a little trinket from every one of his business trips.

My dad told me to close my eyes and not open them until he said so. Ever the obedient little girl, (haha,) I complied, and stood on the slate hearth, wondering what my surprise would be. I felt him slip something small and cool into the chest pocket of my cowboy jammies. When he told me I could open my eyes, I did, and reached into the pocket to pull out a shooter-marble sized, very hard, fluorescent red ball. I turned it over in my hands, thinking that it was a pretty cute ball. My mom smiled and said "Hey, that looks like one of those superballs!" I thought any gift was pretty super, including this little ball, but understood what she meant after my dad winked and took the ball from me.

He stood up, had me step off the hearth, wound up, and slammed that red ball down on the slate. Boy, how it reacted! The ball leaped up to the ceiling, rocketing off and crashing into the wall, then ricocheting over to hit (and knock over, whoops!) the lamp, before hitting the braided rug, which slowed its momentum a bit. It bounced across the floor like a basketball being dribbled by unseen hands, eventually coming to a rest near the kitchen doorway.

I stood wide-eyed and rapt thorough the whole event. That was most certainly the coolest thing I had ever seen in my little life!!! My superball went everywhere with me after that, and I tried it out on every surface imaginable. It also led to a lifelong addiction to the little spheres. To this very day, I find it hard to pass a gumball machine that dispenses superballs without throwing in my quarter(s!!!) for one, becoming excited while I wonder which color I will get!

My first memory of being able to identify a plant was in my backyard when I was a little thing. I was playing outside in the yard with a friend while my dad weeded the small garden we had at our house on Long Island View Road. My friend and I were watching my dad at one point and I noticed a familiar green shoot. I plucked it and announced to my friend that “This is parsley!” and gobbled it down. It tasted like I felt parsley should taste, but in my little mind, I wasn’t quite sure; I had really just been showing off for my friend. She was horrified that I had picked something from the dirt and eaten it, and I was sure I was going to die any second. I was actually afraid to ask my father to confirm or deny it was parsley, in case it wasn’t and I got in trouble. I figured I would die anyway if it wasn’t. Boy was I relieved when days passed, I didn’t die, and my mom actually picked some to use in the dinner one night!

Parsley can be used in many recipes, like this one from Alton Brown: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/parsley-salad-recipe/index.html

Ingredients

4 ounces (about 2 quarts) Italian parsley
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons lemon zest
6 tablespoons walnut oil
2 teaspoons dark sesame oil
1 teaspoon honey
Salt and freshly ground pepper
3 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

Directions

Wash and dry the parsley. Pick the leaves, and set aside. Discard the stems.

In a large bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, zest, walnut oil, sesame oil, honey, and salt and pepper, to taste. Add the parsley and sesame seeds and toss to combine. Allow the salad to sit for at least 30 minutes before serving so that flavors meld.

You can also use parsley as a garnish on just about any dish.

"Of course, after learning all I could find about pickled limes, I had to make some for myself! I bought a bag of limes, pulled out a big glass jar and some kosher salt, and got to work.
I am not sure where I found the directions, but it was pretty simple.

-Scrub the limes really well
-Slice the limes in quarters, but not all the way through (they should look kind of like that paper "fortune-teller" that we all used to make. Do kids still make those? Here are the directions)
-Liberally salt the insides of the limes
-Pack them tightly in the jar
Some juice will come out during the packing, but it probably won't cover the limes, so
-Use enough filtered (non-chlorinated, anyway) water to cover the limes
-Weigh down the limes to keep them submerged by using a clean plate with some type of food-safe weight- I use a soup can
-Put aside for about two weeks, checking every few days and removing any matter from the top of the jar or water."

By now, I suspect everyone is familiar with www.snopes.com and/orwww.truthorfiction.com for determining whether information received via email is just that: true/false or fact/fiction. Both are excellent sites. Below is their advice for us.

1) Star emoticonAny time you see an E-Mail that says forward this on to '10' of your friends, sign this petition, or you'll get bad luck, good luck, or whatever, it almost always has an E-Mail tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and E-Mails of those folks you forward to. The host sender is getting a copy each time it gets forwarded and then is able to get lists of 'active' E-Mails addresses to use in SPAM E-Mails, or sell to other spammers.

2) Almost all E-Mails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards. All it was, and all any of this type of E-Mail is, a way to get names and ' cookie' tracking information for telemarketers and spammers - - to validate active E-Mail accounts for their own profitable purposes.

You can do your friends and family members a GREAT favor by sending this information to them; you will be providing a service to your friends, and will be rewarded by not getting thousands of spam E-Mails in the future!

If you have been sending out (FORWARDING) the above kinds of E-Mail, now you know why you get so much SPAM!

Do yourself a favor and STOP adding your name(S) to those types of listings regardless how inviting they might sound!

Be careful to not try to enlarge the size of your mafia too rapidly because you need to outfit each person in your mafia with the highest quality armor, weapons, and vehicles that you are able to afford. This can swiftly add up so I would suggest that you just build up your investments until you have enough increase your mafia at a later time (once you are making $1 million+/hour). One Christmas Eve when my second-oldest nephew was 18 months old, he disappeared from the living room while we were opening presents. Nobody knew how long he had been gone when we said, "Where's the baby?"

I had a feeling I knew just where he had gone, since we had left the pies and apple crisp on the counter. I flew into the kitchen with my father right behind me.

There was the little guy, standing on a stool he had pushed up to the counter. He had a wooden spoon in his chubby hand and was stirring first the pumpkin pie, then the apple crisp, then the pumpkin pie, and back again. He looked innocently at us and said proudly, "Cookin...? Cookin....?"

Like all great adults, we all grabbed our cameras and snapped away while laughing hysterically.

This commercial reminds me so much of that night, and the boy actually looks like that nephew!
